Ten questions in ten minutes
With Steve Bonnici
Thursday, 15 July 2010
Steve Bonnici is the managing director of Urgent Couriers, a company that prizes itself as number one courier company in New Zealand for service delivery, sustainability and technology.
Steve Bonnici.
Business to Business
- What inspired you to start up your business?
Steve Bonnici
- As a courier, I was frustrated with the level of service the company I worked for allowed me to deliver. Being young and perhaps a little naive, I was confident I could do better. I think I have succeeded.
BtoB
- Who has influenced you the most professionally?
SB
- I have worked with many people who have provided help and guidance. Recently, my business coach Dr Mike Ashby has been very influential. He keeps me focused on the activities which make the most difference to the business.
BtoB
- How would you describe yourself as a businessman?
SB
- Open to new ideas, and an innovator who believes the best people to mine for ideas are the people in your team. Let them loose, and you will be surprised at the results.
BtoB
- What do you consider your greatest achievement?
SB
- Building a sustainable business which delivers excellent service – the key is to have happy people who enjoy their jobs.
BtoB
- With hindsight, what is the one thing you would do differently?
SB
- Procrastinate less.
BtoB
- Who do you find inspirational and why?
SB
- Sir Stephen Tindall – he has an unrelenting belief in New Zealand as the best place in the world to live and do business. He is also willing to put his money where his mouth is to make improvements – through his investment company K1W1, and his foundation which does great social and environmental work.
BtoB
- What is the most inspirational book you have read recently?
SB
- ‘The Breakthrough Company’, a very inspiring book by Keith McFarland. It focuses on how everyday companies have become extraordinary successes.
BtoB
- What is your favourite website and why?
SB
- Google, because you are only a mouse click away from the answer to most questions.
BtoB
-What is the first thing you would do if you became Prime Minister?
SB
- Change course to recognise New Zealand is not going to lift itself up the OECD rankings on the cow’s back. We need to focus on the smart people we have in the country who can be worldwide leaders in clean technology. We have to protect our natural environment – it is our biggest asset and we cannot afford to destroy it. We can’t get another one. I am very keen on the saying ‘Don’t throw anything away, because there is no away!’.
BtoB
- What is the best thing about being in business?
SB
- Having the ability to plot the course of my own future, providing an environment where people can reach their potential. Delivering a service which makes customers say ‘wow’.
