  • Fish & Game believe that a Trustpower scheme to take water from the Rakaia River could have a significant effect on the salmon fishery and the Rakaia mouth yet the power company have failed to properly investigate the consequences of the scheme. The comments come following an application from Trustpower to vary the Water Conservation Order that exists on the Rakaia River to allow increased irrigation and hydro power generation.

  • The Ashburton water management zone implementation programme has been formally received by Environment Canterbury at its council meeting today (Thursday November 24). Environment Canterbury Commissioners voted unanimously to “endorse the Ashburton Zone Implementation Programme as the basis for the design and realignment of work programmes, for drafting regional plan provisions and for preparation of a draft Long Term Plan”. Ashburton District Council will receive the Ashburton Zone Implementation Programme at its council meeting scheduled for December 15.

A six week time frame has been set aside.

  • The Ashburton Zone Committee will meet at the Ashburton Council Chambers on 28 February for its second meeting of 2012. At the meeting the zone committee will discuss the implementation of its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) with Ashburton District and Canterbury Regional council staff. The ZIP was finalised in late 2011 following numerous committee meetings and extensive stakeholder and community engagement. It recommends actions, responsibilities and time-frames for activities to help achieve the principles, targets and goals set out in the CWMS.

  • Two meetings are being held on November 6 for Ashburton district residents to hear more about how water management limits will be set for the area between the Ashburton and Rangitata rivers, as part of the collaborative Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS). The meetings reflect the Ashburton Zone Committee’s recent focus on developing recommendations on limits for the Hinds plains’ sub-regional plan. This plan is part of the sub-regional section of Environment Canterbury’s proposed Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP).
