“You can’t always sit in your corner of the forest and wait for people to come to you... you have to go to them sometimes.” - Winnie the Pooh
It’s quite possible I have used that quote before but this time it has a particular relevance that we’ll get to in a minute.
We humans have a somewhat tedious habit of thinking everything we see before us is all there is.
The people we see, the things we do, the places we go are the only possibilities we have. What a lot of nonsense. As any self respecting Bear of Little Brain will tell you – if you are looking for the North Pole, and it’s not coming to meet you, perhaps it is time to mount an ‘expotition’ and go in search of the dratted thing.
At this juncture I would like to add, that if you are unfamiliar with brainless bears, expotitions and why you should call your surroundings a forest, you must run, not walk, to your nearest book store and buy the complete works of AA Milne. Go now, the rest of us will wait for you....
2010 has been a challenging year for most people one way or another. It feels as though it has been a never ending roller coaster ride this year. From finance companies collapsing to earthquakes to the incomprehensible loss of the Pike River 29, little of this year has seemed easy let alone positive.
So perhaps it is time to tackle our little corner of the forest a bit differently. Perhaps it is time to even venture out of the safety of our little corner, stretch ourselves and Do Something New. Something Daring (and yes please be sure to pronounce the capital letters).
Sure it can be scary – but scary shouldn’t put you off. Scary can be exciting.
Which brings me to the point of quoting my tubby friend earlier.
You see, I have decided it is time to leave my corner of the forest and head out on a new adventure and so this is the last time I shall be gently flicking your ears (or eyes if you wish to be truly pedantic about things) and exhorting you to smile while jumping in puddles, off cliffs or into bowls of ice-cream.
Before you breathe a sigh of relief and wonder if the next editor will be somewhat quieter – I’m not disappearing entirely.
